STARS Celebration 2009
The STARS Celebration is an annual student leadership conference that showcases the accomplishments of the STARS Leadership Corps students and prepares new students for participation in the Corps. Students typically attend the celebration as a cohort from STARS Member Institutions. Sessions for students include technical excellence, leadership skills, research experiences for undergraduates, professional development, and civic engagement. Some ELA students will be presenting info on their STARS projects.

CRA-W to Hold Career Mentoring Workshop at IJCAI 2009
The CRA Committee on the Status of Women in Computing research (CRA-W) will sponsor a Workshop on Research Career Mentoring for Women in Computer Science and Computer Engineering at the 2009 International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI). The workshop will be held on July 11-12, 2009 in Pasadena, CA.
The goal of the workshop is to provide mentoring activities targeting women in professional research careers. The two-track workshop will cover a variety of topics targeted to "junior" academic researchers and industrial and national laboratory researchers.

NSF-Sponsored Academic Workshop for Underrepresented Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Doctoral Students
The Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC), a joint organization of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the Computing Research Association (CRA), and the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS), is organizing the second annual Academic Workshop for Underrepresented Participants funded by an NSF Broadening Participation in Computing grant. The BPC Demonstration grant provides funding for participant travel, lodging, and meeting logistics. As a joint effort of the Computing Research Association's Committee on the Status of Women (CRA-W) and the Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC), we are organizing a workshop in Programming Languages, Operating Systems, & Architecture to be held together with ASPLOS. The workshop is particularly targeted at women and under-represented minority graduate students and early-career faculty with research interests in programming languages, operating systems, & architecture. Through technical panel sessions with academic and industry leaders, as well as other informal activities, the workshop will provide mentoring to support participants in achieving their career goals. Student Volunteer Program: Student volunteers had the opportunity to learn about and discuss the latest high performance computing and networking technologies and meet leading researchers from around the world while contributing to the success of SC08. Students received complimentary conference registration, housing (for out-of-town volunteers) and most meals. The EL Alliance had a strong showing at the SC08 conference (international conference for high performance computing, networking, and storage). EL Alliance students, faculty, mentors, and
supporters actively participated as panelists, Birds-of-a-Feather leaders, and student volunteers at the event, which drew more than 9,000 attendees. The primary focus was on two sessions:
- An interactive panel that was part of the SC08 Broadening Engagement program, entitled “What Would a Conversation of HPC Look Like if You Were in it?” with the following ELA Leadership Team panelists: Roscoe Giles, Boston University; Raquell Holmes, Boston University and University of Connecticut Health Center; Clint Dawson, University of Texas, Austin; and audience participants.
- A Birds-of-a-Feather session, “Building a Diverse HPC Community for SC28,” that included Richard Tapia, Roscoe Giles, Juan Meza of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Mary Wheeler and Clint Dawson of the University of Texas at Austin, Steve Wallach of Centerpoint Venture Partners, Jose Munoz of the NSF, members of the ELA Student Advisory Board, and dozens of students attending the SC08 conference. More than 70 people participated.
ELA representatives also gave the following presentations at SC08: a) Panel: “Financing your Graduate Study,” with Jose Castillo, San Diego State University; Dilma da Silva, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center; Michael Lee, University of Kentucky; b) Panel: “Grad School - Front to Back” with Chris Harris, University of California Irvine; Jamika Burge, The Pennsylvania State University; Dorian Arnold, University of Wisconsin; Lorie Liebrock, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; and c) Talk: "Being Faculty: A View from the Trenches" with Brian Blake, Georgetown University.

Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) of Women in Computing
The EL Alliance had 27 delegates (several received scholarships from the Hopper Celebration or their home institutions) to the GHC. The ELA exhibit served as our meeting place, and our students were ambassadors for the EL Alliance throughout the event. The students also helped with the NSF-supported CONNECT activity directed by Tracy Camp of the Colorado School of Mines, which was a means for attendees to network during and after the conference. Four members of the EL Alliance (UT Austin student Amanda Nunez, University of Maryland student Gleneesha Johnson, UT Austin Coordinator Tiffany Grady, and External Evaluator Lecia Barker) lead a Birds-of-a-Feather session entitled, “A Change for the Better: Improving the Environment at Computing Departments Nationwide.” EL Alliance flyers, water bottles, and ribbons could be seen everywhere.

The EL Alliance can support teams of students interested in becoming part of the STARS Leadership Corps, through which students work on research or service projects for a period of two years. The EL Alliance sent 13 students and seven staff and faculty members from five newly formed EL Alliance STARS teams across the country, strengthening our relationship with the STARS Alliance; our teams gave presentations at the closing session about their project plans. Also, EL Alliance and A4RC (Alliance for Advancing African American Researchers in Computing) students and leaders met to discuss a joint video interview project that will be implemented in 2009. We had multiple opportunities to talk about the EL Alliance in front of the full audience and to encourage people to join.

Three members of the EL Alliance Leadership Team attended this meeting to share information with other BPC representatives about best practices, resources, and project activities. The “reverse poster session” orchestrated by NSF Program Director Jan Cuny provided a dynamic means to share information among the BPC projects. The meeting was an opportunity to make sure other BPCs know about the ELA and help with recruiting. Discussions at this meeting have resulted in collaborative programs with the following Alliances: STARS, A4RC, CAITE, AccessComputing, and the New Image of Computing, and the sharing of information with others.
