PORTLAND, OR - Students and mentors are strongly encouraged to apply for scholarships to attend the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference to be held April 1-4, 2009 in Portland, Oregon. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, October 22, 2008.

The Tapia 2009 Conference scholarships were established to encourage and support participation in the conference by people from groups that are underrepresented in computer science, mathematics, computational sciences and engineering. Scholarships covering travel, hotel accommodations, meals, and conference registration are being provided to assure the attendance of those who would otherwise be unable to attend and ensure diversity in conference attendance.

There is a strong emphasis on student participation and achievements at the Tapia conferences. "The conference offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to learn more about careers and research avenues in computer science and computational mathematics and to network with leading researchers and professionals in these areas," said Tapia 2009 Scholarships Co-Chair Cristina Villalobos of the University of Texas-Pan American. "Tapia conferences are often the first professional meetings many of our students attend and these scholarships help ensure that those who could benefit most from such a conference but may not be able to afford it will still have an opportunity to participate."

The conference theme of "Intellect, Initiative, Insight, and Innovation" in any area of computing, computational math and science, as well as diversity issues, will be emphasized throughout the conference technical program, which includes papers, panels, workshops, Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, posters, and the Doctoral Consortium, and a Robotics Competition.

Scholarship award preference will be given to students and mentors (from academia, industry, or government) who plan to present in the technical program. In addition, preference will be given to teams of faculty and students, according to Scholarships Co-Chair Luis Melara, of Shippensburg University.
